Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Your lecture today may well be related to glaciology as you'll visit College Fjord which holds five tidewater glaciers, five valley glaciers and a dozen others. The 1899 Harriman Expedition team (which charted the fjord) named the glaciers after their alma maters including Vassar, Harvard and Yale. You'll note that Princeton is missing, apparently a deliberate snub. You’ll get as close to the glaciers as possible, taking small expedition boats on the fjord if conditions permit, or go in kayaks as an optional excursion. From the water you might glimpse humpback whales, Bald Eagles, otters and sea lions who inhabit this icy wilderness.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Prepare for an expedition day of wildlife watching in the glacier-fed waters of Icy Bay. You might spot that three glaciers (Guyot, Yahtse and Tyndall) regularly calf into the bay. If conditions allow, the Expedition Team will take you ashore on the 55km long and 13km wide Guyot Glacier or you can explore in kayaks on an optional excursion.
Wildlife abounds in the gulf of Alaska, offering unrivalled photography opportunities of humpback whales, orcas, Stellar sea lions, sea otters and harbour seals lazing on floating chunks of ice. The onboard photographer is ready with expert tips on how to get the best from your camera.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Today you are in for some whale watching and wilderness exploration. In the morning, you will pass Point Adolphus on the northern tip of Chichagof Island, across from Glacier Bay National Park. These nutrient-rich waters are famous for attracting humpback whales and other marine life so be sure to get out on deck and have your camera ready.
Visit William Henry Bay, lying south of Haines at the edge of the Chilkat mountain range, on an included excursion. The ship will drop anchor here so you can explore the shores lined with old-growth forests under the guidance of an expert local guide where you might be able to spot brown bears, black bears and moose.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
The frontier town of Haines was originally home to the Chilkat Tlingit people, renowned for their weaving skills. You’ll see examples of their intricately beautiful work in the blankets on display in the Haines Sheldon Museum.
You’ll visit Fort Seward while you’re ashore as well as the flourishing art scene in Haines itself. The galleries and workshops are filled with stunning Totem carvings, silverwork and sculptures. Discover your own artistic side by trying your photography skills on incredible landscapes and wildlife. Look out for bears, moose and bald eagles which this town is famous for.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Explore icebergs and wildlife in idyllic twin fjords. Holkham Bay has two arms, Tracy and Endicott, both beautiful fjords that are out of reach for larger cruise ships. Your captain will decide which offers better exploration options on the day but don't worry, both are equally special. At the end of each fjord, fresh icebergs calve from the glaciers against a stunning backdrop of forested cliffs.
Endicott Arm is a breeding ground for harbour seals which are often seen on the floating ice. Here you might also see whales, bears, mountain goats and moose. Get wildlife tips from the onboard photographer before heading out on expedition boats to get closer to these unique sights.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Surrounded by Tongass National Forest, Sitka is only accessible by sea and air. Get out on deck for stunning views of the Sisters Mountains and Mount Edgecumbe Volcano.
Discover Sitka's fascinating history with the Expedition team. It was inhabited by the Tlingit for 10,000 years before being occupied by Russia in 1804 and then sold to America after the Crimean War. Today, modern Sitka blends all three cultures so it's worth visiting the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, the Russian Bishop's House and the Sitka National Historic Park where you'll see ornate Haida and Tlingit totem poles.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Today you will continue your cruise to Petersburg which is perched at the edge of stunning Frederick Sound. Settled by a Norwegian in the 1800s and fondly known as 'Little Norway', its shallow and bustling harbour houses Alaska's largest home-based halibut fishing fleet.
Hurtigruten ships are small enough to enter this area and their shared Norwegian heritage makes for a great talking point with the local community as you explore this charming town. From the waterfront, you can watch icebergs float down the sound and look across to North America’s biggest rockface, the Devil’s Thumb.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Next, your cruise of the Alaskan islands takes you to Wrangell. Just out of town, you’ll find the ancient rock carvings of Petroglyph Beach so bring paper and take some stone rubbings as a unique souvenir before learning more about Wrangell's fascinating past in the local museum. Now part of the USA, it’s been governed by Britain, Russia and the Tlingit people however you'll find that on Shakes Island, the Chief Shakes Tribal House and totem poles tell the Tlingit story.
Your visit includes a trip on the waters in small expedition boats however on land, hikers will enjoy the nature trails from Stikine River and Mount Dewey to the rainforest.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Experience the Alaskan wilderness where wildlife thrives all around. Part of the Tongass National Forest, Misty Fjords is a pristine wilderness of evergreens, waterfalls and snow-capped peaks. Influential mountaineer John Muir described it as one of the most beautiful places he’d ever seen.
Weather permitting, you'll join the Expedition team to tour Misty Fjords on small expedition boats or take kayaks out for an optional excursion. Look out for mountain goats, bears hummingbirds, herons and moose on land while keeping an eye out for Pacific salmon, otters, sea lions, harbour seals, orcas and Dall porpoises in the water.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Get up close to nature as you explore the islands and channels of the Inside Passage. On a smaller expedition ship, you'll get an unrivalled intimate experience of the protected North American Pacific fjordland. As the ship navigates the lesser-travelled channels, you’ll get close to the beautiful and fascinating scenery so keep your binoculars close at hand.
As always, there’s plenty to see and learn in the Science Center with insightful lectures from the Expedition team. This is also a great time to wind down with a little pampering in the spa or to take time sitting up on deck with your fellow explorers as the stunning scenery slips by.
Overnight: Hurtigruten 'MS Roald Amundsen'
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Experience indigenous heritage and rich wildlife in Alert Bay, a scenic village on Cormorant Island that's north of Vancouver Island. Here you’ll have the opportunity to meet and learn from the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations community, being welcomed by them is a real privilege.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Alaska
The climate in southern Alaska is mild by state standards, due to its proximity to the ocean; the summer temperature often reaches a comfortable 18°C. The climate in the extreme north of Alaska is what would be expected for an area north of the Arctic Circle: It is an Arctic climate with short, cool summers where, during some weeks, the sun stays above the horizon for 24 hours. While it may not be necessary to bring a swimsuit, sunscreen will certainly come in handy! The best time to visit Alaska is during the summer. The summer season is from end of May to mid August. This period is also the driest, and not to forget that the sun is up most of the time.
