Tour through the civic district, with the ministerial building surrounding the government’s house, the Palacio de la Moneda, a silent witness of the most relevant event in the republican history. Then observe magnificent panoramic views of the city and mountains before heading to the western area to see the great architectural contrast. A thriving and contemporary city with impressive buildings of daring styles that represent a seal of modernity to this big city. Afterwards, be returned to the hotel.

Tendered: 07:00 to 16:00

No city on the planet has a more southerly latitude. As a result, the sun shines for 18 hours during each summer day, providing ample opportunity to view the mix of glaciers, forests and sea, all framed by Mount Martial to the west and Mounts Olivia and Cinco Hermanos to the east. There’s a magnificent wealth of history and culture to discover. The town was formerly a missionary base, penal colony, and naval base, but has increasingly become a major tourist destination with many attractions, including restaurants, sightseeing, and casinos. You can choose one of the optional shore excursions and explore Tierra del Fuego National Park on a day hike through the wilderness, or hike along the coast and glacial lakes. The End of the World Museum offers a wonderful glimpse into the history and culture that shaped this city and includes collections of artifacts and pieces from the first expeditions, as well as the indigenous people who once inhabited the region. Savor authentic Argentinian specialties made with the freshest seafood, like king crab, seabass, ceviche, and grilled octopus or the ever popular, slow-cooked Fuegian lamb, and delicious regional wines.

Day 13 Punta Arenas, Chile

Tendered: 09:00 to 18:30

You’ll often hear Punta Arenas referred to as the southernmost city in the world, and its location against the Strait of Magellan with a backdrop of the Andes does indeed make you feel like you’re at the end of the earth. Surrounded by soaring mountains, beautiful national parks, vast ice fields and towering glaciers, the city itself has been a hub of commerce and trade for generations, thanks to its access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. You can choose to take an optional shore excursion to trek through Magallanes National Reserve or visit the penguin colony at Seno Otway.

Day 14 Strait of Magellan - Cruising

You’ll never forget the moment you first cruise down the famous Strait of Magellan, a sailing route located between the bottom tip of South America and Tierra del Fuego. First discovered in 1520 by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the Strait of Magellan used to be one of the only ways to cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean before the opening of the Panama Canal.

Admire sparkling blue glaciers and marvel at the stunning Seno Eyre Fjord. Watch humpback whales breaching the water and Magellanic penguins socializing on land. There’s no shortage of breathtaking scenery to witness while sailing across this historic channel of water

Day 17 Disembark - Valparaiso, Chile

Disembark 05:00

This morning you will enjoy breakfast onboard before disembarking.

Before heading to Santiago, you will have the opportunity to explore Valparaiso city and Viña del Mar. Valparaíso, the main port in Chile, is considered a World Heritage Site by its rare architecture and narrow-street display, passages, and stairs that go up to the top of the hills. Brilliant murals and wonderful street art in bright, bold color dominates this seaside town. Viña del Mar, the most visited tourist seaside resort in the country, is also known as the Ciudad Jardín (Garden City) because of all the green areas that surround it, wide sidewalks, beautiful plazas, and bloomed gardens. You’ll enjoy lunch as part of this tour.

Afterwards, continue on to Santiago where you will check in to your hotel for the next 3 nights.

Overnight: Torremayor Providencia Hotel or similar, Santiago de Chile

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 18 Explore Santiago

Today, after breakfast, embark on a city sightseeing tour where you will first head to Plaza de Armas (translates to ‘square of weapons’) which in colonial times a gallows was the square's grisly centrepiece, today it's a fountain celebrating libertador (liberator) Bernardo O'Higgins, shaded by more than a hundred Chilean palm trees. Tour through the civic district, with the ministerial building surrounding the government’s house, the Palacio de la Moneda, a silent witness of the most relevant event in the republican history. To conclude the historical area, a tour of the old and stately neighbourhoods of the old “high society”, a place full of an exquisite architectural variety brought by immigrants, mainly European, in a time of great mining exploitation and high-born families. Then observe magnificent panoramic views of the city and mountains before heading to the western area to see the great architectural contrast. A thriving and contemporary city with impressive buildings of daring styles that represent a seal of modernity to this big city. Afterwards, be returned to the hotel.

In the evening you will enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant to experience Chilean cuisine, a soft drink and 2 glasses of wine per person are also included.

Overnight: Torremayor Providencia Hotel or similar, Santiago de Chile

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 19 Santiago de Chile - Day at Leisure

After breakfast, enjoy a free day to explore Santiago at your own leisure. Alternatively, you can choose to partake in the following optional activity:

Optional Activity: Cajón del Maipo & Embalse El Yeso - AUD $300 per person

As you travel toward the Maipo Canyon, admire the wonderful views of this natural landscape full of high mountain passes, lakes, and forests. Hear about the area's traditions and listen to folktales told by your guide. Along the way, you'll pass the Tinoco Tunnel, a dark disused train tunnel that runs along the Camino Al Volcán, a remnant from the region's railway days. Listen as your guide tells you about the history of this unusual attraction and the tragic story behind the shrines located at the tunnel's entrance and exit. Not far from here, you'll reach the El Yeso Dam. This large reservoir was created in 1964 by damming the Yeso River and now serves as one of the major sources of water for Santiago. Stop here to enjoy a picnic-style lunch served with a glass of wine and some juice

Overnight: Torremayor Providencia Hotel or similar, Santiago de Chile

Day 20 Santiago de Chile to Cusco, Peru

Today at the appropriate time you will be transferred to the airport in preparation of your onward flight to Cusco Peru. Once arrived in Cusco, you will be met by a tour representative and transferred to the hotel.

Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, is one of the most fascinating cities in South America. Just walking through the city center you can see the incredible mix of Inca and colonial architecture, watch the merging of indigenous and Spanish influences, and feel the history that flows through every cobblestone street.

Overnight: Wyndham Costa del Sol, Cusco or similar, Cusco

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 21 Cusco City Tour

Today you will enjoy a guided tour of beautiful Cusco. First head to the wonderful Koricancha, next door to Santo Domingo Church. The Koricancha was the most sacred and most important temple in the Incan Empire. Its walls were covered with gold, and life-size statues of plants and animals – all made of pure gold and silver. Sadly, this wealth was stripped out by the Spanish conquistadors.

Next head to Cusco Cathedral, located on the Plaza de Armas. Built between 1560 and 1654 on top of the foundations of an existing Incan temple, this spectacular cathedral houses many works of art by the Cusco School of painters, and its main altar and pulpit are covered in gold and silver relief work.

The next stop is the imposing Incan fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which sits on a hill above Cusco. See some of the finest examples of Incan stonework and construction, including massive rocks that were carefully cut and perfectly fitted together to form the walls. From here you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of Cusco. After exploring Sacsayhuaman, head up the hill to the Tambomachay Archeological Complex. The exact purpose of this site is unknown, but it may have functioned, at least in part, as an Incan spa.

After the tour you will be returned to the hotel where you will enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Wyndham Costa del Sol, Cusco or similar, Cusco

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 22 Sacred Valley

Today you'll embark on a full-day tour to Maras, Moray, and Ollantaytambo. First, visit the impressive Moray, an Inca agricultural laboratory. The journey takes about 1.5 hours, offering breathtaking Andean landscapes, including yellow wheat fields, charming traditional villages, and snow-capped mountains.

Upon arrival at Moray, your guide will lead you through the three amphitheater-like terraced structures. These circular terraces were used as experimental fields to determine the best growing conditions for different crops. It's a remarkable sight that reveals the ingenuity of the Inca Empire. Next, continue to Maras, here you'll witness the incredible salt evaporation ponds, which were utilized by the Incas and possibly even pre-Inca civilizations. Over 3,000 salt pools are carved into the mountainside, collecting highly saline water from a spring. As the water evaporates, the salt remains, forming the famous pink table salt known as sal de Maras. The salt ponds resemble a snowy or icy landscape, creating a truly stunning view.

Afterwards, stop at a restaurant for approximately 45 minutes for lunch (not included). Following a 30-minute drive, reach the captivating Inca town and archaeological site of Ollantaytambo. This was once the royal estate of Inca emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region and constructed the town and ceremonial center. Spending about an hour exploring the ruins, you'll visit the remarkable Temple of the Sun and witness the perfectly carved and polished massive stone blocks crafted by skilled Inca stonemasons. Returning to the town, you'll observe the intricate Inca water system, still in use today, as we walk towards the town square. From there, you'll have panoramic views of the ruins above, as well as Inca granaries and store houses built into the surrounding mountainsides. After Ollantaytambo, head back to Urubamba, which concludes the Sacred Valley tour.

Overnight: La Casona de Yucay Hotel or similar, Urubamba

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 23 Machu Picchu Pueblo

You will be pick up early in the morning and head to the train station for the journey to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo. The train departs around 08:30, offering scenic views of river canyons and rolling hills during the 1.5-hour ride. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, your guide will meet you at the train station. From there, we'll take a short bus ride with zigzag ascent to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Entering the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, our experienced guide will lead a two-hour walking tour. You'll explore the iconic landmarks such as the House of the Guardian, Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, and more (subject to the circuit determined by the Ministry of Culture). As we walk, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Machu Picchu's agricultural terraces, as well as the surrounding mountains and deep gorges.

After the tour, we'll take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you'll have time to relax. Aguas Calientes is known for its hot springs, so you can unwind and take a dip in one of the thermal baths. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to explore the city, visit the vibrant markets, and experience the lively atmosphere of this unique Peruvian town.

Overnight: El Mapi by Inkaterra or similar, Machu Picchu Pueblo

Meals included: Breakfast; Dinner

Day 24 Machu Picchu Pueblo to Cusco

You will be picked up early in the morning and taken to the train station for the journey to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo. The train departs around 08:30, offering scenic views of river canyons and rolling hills during the 1.5-hour ride. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, your guide will meet you at the train station. From there, take a short bus ride with zigzag ascent to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Entering the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, the guide will lead a two-hour walking tour. You'll explore the iconic landmarks such as the House of the Guardian, Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, and more (subject to the circuit determined by the Ministry of Culture). As you walk, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Machu Picchu's agricultural terraces, as well as the surrounding mountains and deep gorges.

This morning you have at leisure, or alternatively you can choose an optional second visit to Machu Picchu for sunrise.

In the afternoon you will board the train back to Poroy and upon arrival you will be met and transferred to the hotel in Cusco.

Optional Tour: Sunrise at Machu Picchu AUD $160 per person

Take this opportunity to see the Famous Machu Picchu at sunrise.

Optional Tour: Wayanpicchu Mountain AUD $230 per person

Fitness Level: Demanding; A high fitness level is required to undertake these activities, which may include high-altitude trekking for anywhere between four to seven hours per day for an extended number of days. Recommended for active travellers with some previous trekking experience.

Age limit: Not suitable for those under 8 years of age.

Wayanpicchu (also called Huayna Picchu) is a mountain that appears behind the classic image of Machu Picchu. This optional activity is the chance to climb this sought after, challenging, short hike. This is a bucket list hiking trail that takes you to the top of Wayna Picchu and at the summit you get to see original Inca buildings and epic panoramic views.

Beginning in Machu Picchu Pueblo or Aguas Calientes, after breakfast, you will go to the bus station to take a panoramic tour of the winding road that leads to the mountain to Machu Picchu for approximately 30 minutes. After this short bus ride, you will arrive at the gates of Machu Picchu, which are located 2,400 meters above sea level (7,874 feet). You will enter the Inca citadel and begin your visit to this wonder; you will see all the most famous and spectacular parts of the extensive archaeological complex and if you have the entrance to Huayna Picchu you will be able to enjoy this sugar loaf that is often seen in the mountains photos of Machu Picchu, rising behind the ruins. It is a fascinating ascent up the steep and narrow Inca trail that leads up the mountain, and you will be able to see how the Incas cut some steps directly into the rock. At the top, you will see narrow Inca stairs and altars, and you will have incredible views of Machu Picchu.

Despite being a relatively short hike lasting 1.5-2 hours, it is quite challenging. It is a very steep climb with some big steps and sometimes you will find yourself scrambling up the rocks at the top. There are also some disconcerting drops to one side of the narrow stairs, so this hike is not recommended for people with a fear of heights. But if you're feeling brave and think you'll have enough energy to do this hike after exploring Machu Picchu, it's worth considering.

Later in the afternoon, you will leave Machu Picchu and take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you can have lunch at one of the many restaurants (at your own expense). You will then board the train back to Poroy at approximately 15:20. When you arrive in Poroy at approximately 19:00, you will be picked you up and taken back to your hotel in Cusco.

Important: If you want to book this visit on your trip to Machu Picchu, you must book at least 4 months in advance because spaces are reduced and regulated by the state.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
