When Christopher Columbus first discovered the northern shores of the Dominican Republic in the late 15th century, he christened it San Felipe de Puerto Plata or ‘Port of Silver’ after the glistening silver mountain peak shrouded in fog. Situated at the base of Isabel de Torres Mountain, Puerto Plata flourished as a major trade centre for the Spanish colonies, until smuggling and strife razed the city completely in the mid-19th century and it was rebuilt anew in Victorian and neoclassic architecture.
Today, its well-preserved historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Puerto Plata draws vacationers from around the world to its numerous tourist attractions, including whimsical waterfalls, beautiful stretches of white-sand beaches at Playa Dorada and Cabarete, and spectacular snorkelling sites all waiting to be explored on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles Cruise.

Blessed with some of the oldest buildings in the Western Hemisphere, San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital, is romantically charming with its bright pastel Spanish colonial facades, wrought-iron balconies abloom with flowers, narrow cobblestone streets and beloved park squares. Once you arrive on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise at the port, explore Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan), a UNESCO World Heritage district, widely renowned for the fortresses of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and the Castillo San Cristóbal.
The old town occupies the headland of a 2.5-mile-long island (connected by bridge to the mainland) that shelters San Juan Bay, for centuries a key port in the New World. It was originally known as Puerto Rico, or “rich port,” because its location made it the perfect stop for shipping.

Proclaimed a pirate republic by the early 1700s, Nassau once sheltered more than 1,000 pirates, outnumbering the hundred inhabitants of the town.
While its pirate history runs deep, today Nassau, located on the island of New Providence, is the capital and commercial centre of the Bahamas and the archipelago’s largest city. As you arrive on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise, take in Nassau’s charming colonial-style buildings and pastel-coloured wooden shops that alternate with Georgian-style structures. Founded by the British in 1670, Nassau stretches from the harbour to Bay Street, the main drag through town that is replete with shops, souvenirs, restaurants and entertainment. At Straw Market, where typical Bahamian souvenirs are sold, be prepared to bargain – it’s a tradition that is almost a duty.
A popular tourist area is Cable Beach, a 4-mile stretch of beach and resorts on the north central coast of New Providence, 3 miles from Nassau. Paradise Beach, on Paradise Island, is one of the best beaches in the area.

Spend the day snorkelling, paddle boarding, jet skiing and more, or for wellness and relaxation, visit The Spa at Ocean Cay offering beachside massages. Grab a snack or refresh with an Instagram-worthy beverage at food trucks and beach bars throughout the island.
It's no wonder Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve has been named Best New Cruise Destination.

Miami is called the gateway to the Americas, and it’s indeed a very glamourous global city to explore at the start or end of an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise. Home to many cultures, the city of Miami sizzles with flavours from the Americas, beginning with Cuba and the Little Havana neighbourhood - one of the most historically significant places, while Wynwood is famous for its wall art and Puerto Rican history.
Across Biscayne Bay lies the city of Miami Beach, home to the world-famous South Beach. An MSC-arranged guided private tour opens up a world of possibilities for you: enjoy the beach, take in the city’s Art Deco architecture and enjoy a drink on legendary Ocean Drive, where you can people-watch, and perhaps spot a celebrity. If time permits, take a stroll on artsy Lincoln Road packed with street-side cafes and shops.

While the name Ocho Rios means eight rivers in Spanish, a truer reflection of its name (considering the city has four rivers) may stem from its earlier Spanish name of Las Chorreras, referring to its waterfalls. In either case, it’s precisely its existing rivers, beautiful waterfalls and crystalline sea that promise to awe visitors to Jamaica who have a passion for the lush outdoors.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.
Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Southern United States
The more Southern states (Georgia; Alabama; Mississippi; South Carolina; Louisiana and Arkansas) experiences seasonal contrast in both temperate and foliage. Spring brings blooming gardens, warm days, cool mornings, and evenings (average 21°C, 71°F). Hot summer days and nights (temperatures average 27°C or 84°F) herald the arrival of summer with high humidity resulting from afternoon showers; autumn heralds milder temperatures, although many areas experience an "Indian Summer" of warm days (average temperature 19°C or 69KF). Winters are traditionally cold with more rainfall or precipitation (average temperatures 11°C or 52°F).
The Piedmont (North Carolina; Tennessee; Kentucky; Missouri; Virginia and West Virginia plus the mountains and foothills of Arkansas and South Carolina) have similar temperatures in the spring and summer as the more Southern states, yet can be cooler in the mountainous areas. Autumn leaves bursts into a colorful blaze of reds, oranges and yellows with temperatures at a pleasant 17°C or 63°F. Winter brings cooler temperatures, even overnight frost and occasional, but rare, snow (average temperature 7°C or 44°F).
Caribbean
The Caribbean Islands all year round enjoy a hot tropical climate with average high temperatures of approx. 28°C. Ideal weather for long sunny beach days! The weather is tropical and therefore they do also have a few months of wet season throughout the year.

Gratuities / Tipping
Land
Gratuities (tips) are not included for the services of the tour leader (when available) and driver throughout the tour. The highly recommended tip is $4USD for the driver and $5USD for the guide, per person per day. This covers the guide/leader and the driver and will be collected on tour.
Please note: Though highly recommended, tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.
Cruise
Gratuities (tips) are not included for the cruise staff's services throughout this tour's cruise component. MSC is an internationally registered company & operates to US & European standards, both of which have an economy driven by a tipping culture. Gratuities are expected on your cruise and will be charged to your onboard account at approximately $14 USD per person per day. If you have any questions regarding the gratuities on your cruise, please speak to the guest services staff onboard the ship.
Sightseeing
Please note: If entrance to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).
Shopping
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.
