A popular stop on the tour includes the sobering Apartheid Museum.

Afterwards, visit the Southwestern Townships - ‘Soweto’. Only 15 km from the Johannesburg city centre this both famous and infamous neighbourhood covers an acreage of just 63 km2. Make a stop at Hector Pieterson Memorial, dedicated to preserve the memory of the 1976 Soweto uprisings.

Afterwards, continue through the South African countryside to the 5-star Ivory Tree Lodge for the next 4 nights. A large pool, the Amani African Spa, outdoor dining, and spectacular game viewing make for the perfect holiday.

Pilanesberg National Park is also a sought-after wildlife destination in a malaria-free zone. The park is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, black rhinoceros, African bush elephant, and African buffalo) and only 2 hours from Johannesburg. The unique biosphere of the Pilanesberg National Park is home to one of the country’s most famous wildlife areas. The park is set in an ancient volcanic crater. This well-stocked reserve has a dramatic landscape that supports a wide variety of plants, animals, and birds. Luxurious suites provide a calm retreat after exciting days in the bush. Warm and earthy tones create a welcoming feeling, while a covered patio and outdoor shower allow you to relax into the unique environment of the Pilanesberg. The park is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, black rhinoceros, African bush elephant, and African buffalo) and only 2 hours from Johannesburg. TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER

Tour Guide:

Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture, and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:

An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES

Johannesburg is situated on the highveld plateau and has a subtropical highland climate. The city enjoys a sunny climate, with the summer months (October to April) characterised by hot days followed by afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings, and the winter months (May to September) by dry, sunny days followed by cold nights. The UV index for Johannesburg in summers is extreme, often reaching 14-16 due to the high elevation and proximity to the equator.

The dry season lasts from May to August, with abundant sunshine and occasional night-time freezes; July is the coldest month with an average of 9.7°C. The wet season lasts from December to March, with night frost less common; November averages 13.3°C. Temperatures usually range from 0.2°C to 20.9°C.
