Ålesund, a quaint fishing town of approximately 45,000 in western Norway, has been called Norway's most beautiful city. A fire in 1904 destroyed much of it, resulting in the town being rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style—also known as Jugendstil—that was popular around the turn of the 20th century. A year after the fire, Norway gained its independence from Sweden, which led to a campaign to build a "Norwegian town" to mark the creation of the new nation. The colourful buildings feature castle-like turrets and spires with intricate facades of ornamental flowers, gargoyles and Viking-inspired decorations.
Bordering the Norwegian Sea, this area is also famous for its mountain ranges and fjords. Nearby is the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its beautiful waterfalls. This is also home to Atlanterhavsparken, or the Atlantic Sea Park, one of the largest aquariums in Europe.
Relax and take in fairy-tale landscapes on a scenic cruise through Breisundet, a 5-kilometre strait stretching to the Norwegian Sea. Bring your binoculars to the deck; the beauty of Norway is on full display. Glide past cherry-red hamlets, deserted fishing villages and layered mountain peaks, all reflected perfectly in the water. When you think the scene can't get prettier, a spectacular rainbow will arch over it all. Breisundet strait bustles with shipping and passenger vessels. It's no surprise that with all this nature, hiking, biking, and wildlife watching are the most popular activities ashore.

Bordered on three sides by dramatic mountains that form a natural harbour, the idyllic town of Ísafjörður—population 2,600—serves as a charming exploration hub for the surrounding Westfjords peninsula. Settled since the 16th century and traditionally dependent on fishing as its primary source of income, its streets are lined with old wooden houses interspersed with occasional shops, restaurants and cafés.
Despite its low-key atmosphere, Ísafjörður offers plenty to do, from visiting local museums and enjoying a game of golf to hiking, biking and kayaking around the town and harbour. The rugged and remote Westfjords offer many more attractions. A daily summer ferry transports visitors to the scenic Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and Vigur, an island home to many protected bird populations. Follow the region's striking coastline, and you'll find snow-streaked mountains, waterfalls and beaches.
Although it is the largest town in and the capital of the Westfjords region of Iceland, Ísafjörður has a mere 2,600 inhabitants and is only connected to the mainland by a narrow nine-metre-wide isthmus. Local lore has it that the isthmus, and the town itself, were formed by a group of trolls who wanted to live apart from humans. Despite its small population, Ísafjörður has earned a reputation as a cultured and sophisticated town thanks to its excellent choral and theatrical groups, a nationally known theatre festival called Act Alone, and the famous music festival Aldrei Fór Ég Suður ("I Never Went South") held each Easter. Ísafjörður and its outlying regions stretch over 2,300 square kilometres from the stunning waterfall of Dynjandi in the south to the vast Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the north where, on the cliff of Hornbjarg, visitors can see the largest colony of seabirds in the North Atlantic. Along Iceland's spectacular coastline, glacier-carved green mountains stand in contrast against the deep blue sea. Given its location, it's no surprise that the fishing industry has long been central to life in Ísafjörður—you'll likely pass fishing boats headed out to sea.

Nanortalik, which means "the place with polar bears," is the southernmost town in Greenland, located on an island of the same name. Founded in 1797 as a trading depot at the mouth of Tasermiut Fjord, the town is home to approximately 1,000 people. Although the island is named for polar bears, the chance of seeing these furry giants is pretty slim. What you will find, however, is a place of majestic beauty and friendly, welcoming residents.
From the nearby Tasermiut Fjord, where rocky summits rise above a narrow glacial inlet, to the Qinngua Valley—the only Greenland forest—Nanortalik is surrounded by natural wonders. Culturally there is just as much to experience. For history buffs, the Nanortalik Museum explores native, Old Norse and European colonial history as it shaped Greenland, with nine historic buildings and the world's oldest umiak (seal skin boat).

Located near Cape Thorvaldsen, Qaqortoq is the most populous town in southern Greenland. The area has a rich history, as it has been inhabited continuously since prehistoric times. You can still see traces of Thule and Norse cultures throughout the region, starting with the ruins of the 14th-century Hvalsey Church at the nearby Hvalsey Fjord.
Qaqortoq is home to the oldest fountain in Greenland; completed in 1932, it depicts whales spouting water out of their blowholes. Most of the city’s main attractions, including restaurants and the Qaqortoq Museum, are located on or close to the main square.

Laid-back and effortlessly cool, the world's most northerly capital, Reykjavik, is like nowhere else on earth. With geothermal water pumping through its veins and a staggering backdrop of gnarly lava fields, majestic glaciers and rainbow-coloured houses, Reykjavík is famous for its natural wonders and dramatic scenery. But what is less well known is that the miniature Icelandic city has cultural offerings to rival many destinations twice its size. A thriving food scene showcases traditional Nordic cuisine and modern and international trends, and the city's creative output is in high gear with internationally acclaimed designers, musicians and artists.

Some 4,500 people live on Heimaey, a 13-square-kilometre island off the southern coast of Iceland. It's mentioned in some mediaeval Icelandic sagas and was attacked in a Turkish raid in the 17th century, but events on January 23, 1973, really put Heimaey on the map. On that day, the island's inhabitants woke up to an earthquake and plumes of ash from the volcano Eldfell, followed by lava flows. Most residents were evacuated, while a few remained to defend the harbour by spraying ocean water on the hot molten lava. When the eruption subsided almost six months later, the island had grown by 2.2 square kilometres, and half of the town had been destroyed—but the harbour had been saved. Most of the island's residents returned, and in the years since, Heimaey has become known as a dramatic microcosm of Iceland's remarkable geological activity. The 1973 eruption is the focus of the fascinating Eldheimar museum; among the exhibits is a house that, as in Pompeii, was engulfed in ash.

Djúpivogur, a quiet fishing village with fewer than 500 residents, sits on the eastern coast of Iceland and dates back to the days of the Vikings. Despite the fearsome reputation of those who first established Djúpivogur today, its dramatic natural setting draws visitors to this remote corner of the country. Located on Berufjörður, it is near stunning natural wonders like the Hofellsjökull Glacier and the Valley of Waterfalls. Wherever you journey in the region, you'll come upon stunning vistas and a landscape shaped by glaciers and geothermal activity. The village is home to intriguing sites like Langabúð, a log house built in 1790 that now houses artefacts related to Iceland's long-held folk traditions. (These include believing in "hidden folk" who live in the ancient windswept landscapes of rock, glaciers and lava.)
Majestic Berufjordur in West Iceland is the dramatic setting for many an Icelandic saga, not surprising given the magical quality of its ruggedly beautiful terrain, vegetation and wildlife.

The Isle of Skye, the largest of the Inner Hebrides, offers an intriguing and curious contrast of landscapes and cultures. Between the green rolling hills and the jagged mountain ranges, the Quiraing ridge dominates the island's north, attracting wildlife watchers and hikers keen to test their abilities. The island's rich history, too—its Celtic, Norse, and Scottish influences can be picked up in casual conversations (and more formally at the Aros cultural centre), while Scottish Gaelic is enjoying something of a revival. Skye's also home to 170-million-year-old dinosaur footprints, the 800-year-old Dunvegan Castle and the Talisker distillery, which dates back to 1830.
Portree is the centre of commerce and cultural life on the island, with several boutiques, cafés and pubs that belies the town's size. The eye-catching harbour welcomes cruise ships and fishing boats bringing in the day's fresh catch (which you can easily find at the many restaurants). If you remain near the harbour, spend at least an hour wandering the narrow streets nearby.

While the southernmost isles of Orkney closely straddle the northeast corner of the Scottish mainland, historically, the archipelago (around 70 islands in all) and its people have had as much in common with Scandinavia as they have had with Scotland. In fact, until the 15th century, the Orkney Islands were politically part of Norway.
Today the Orcadians are a fairly tight-knit and cooperative group of Scots—a rich community of artists and crofters (small-holding farmers), fisherfolk and those in the trades. A key tourist attraction is the wealth of prehistoric sites on Orkney, including standing stones, burial chambers and even Stone Age settlements, such as Skara Brae, inhabited sometime around 3000 B.C.E. More recently, because of its isolation, Orkney was chosen to keep Italian prisoners of war during WWII; a chapel built by them is a popular site to visit.
The island capital is Kirkwall (originally Kirkjuvagr meaning Church Bay). Here you'll find the Cathedral of St. Magnus—one of only two pre–Reformation cathedrals still largely intact in Scotland (the other is Glasgow's St. Mungo).

History was made in this port, just across the Firth of Forth from Rosyth, when the future Queen Margaret of Scotland arrived around 1071. Her devout religious attitude established "Queen's Ferry" as the place for pilgrims from abroad to descend to St. Andrews—Scotland's ecclesiastical capital in the Middle Ages. Margaret's legacy continues less than a dozen miles away at Edinburgh Castle. St. Margaret's Chapel is a crucial attraction on the castle's rock, believed to be the oldest section of the fortifications and where she worshipped.

There's more to Scotland's capital than the Castle. Edinburgh proudly displays multiple exhibits on national and international scientific achievement at the National Museum of Scotland and some fantastic works of visual art at the National Galleries of Scotland. South Queensferry's moorings are also within easy striking distance of Scotland's most significant metropolis: Glasgow. Transformed in many ways since the post–WWII days when it had a reputation for grime and crime, the city is among the most vibrant in the U.K.: It is Scotland's de-facto capital of modern culture, with the hippest DJs and most accomplished conceptual artists.

Newcastle upon Tyne is a classic city in England’s north country, where you can visit reminders of some 2,000 years of British history. The city’s crucial location along the River Tyne has meant that it has been the site of Roman forts under Emperor Hadrian and Norman castles under William the Conqueror and the kings that succeeded him. A walk through the city finds a mix of modern and old, with new structures like the Gateshead Millennium Bridge alongside Victorian storefronts, Edwardian marketplaces and remnants of the Industrial Revolution.
Perhaps Newcastle’s most recognizable claim to fame is its renowned beer, Newcastle Brown Ale, which you can sample, along with other local craft ales, at historic pubs.
