You are just one in a long line of visitors to A Coruña as Celts, Romans, Vikings, Moors, Visigoths, English warships and Napoleon’s troops have all passed through this city and verdant region. Before departing, each would leave their marks on the landscape and culture of A Coruña but what has endured are the crashing waves, the rocky cliffs and the people of Galicia.
A Coruña is a wealthy city as a result of an industry flourishing around the port where its subtle allure and attractions can be unlocked with a simple stroll. Walk the waterfront promenade out past the Roman Torre de Hércules and you'll reach the edge of the continent, or you can amble through the narrow cobblestone streets of the Old Town to find cafés and shops, bustling squares and shady gardens.

Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal, is sometimes dismissed as Lisbon’s business-minded sibling but underneath its commercial and industrial surface, there's a lively scene. Here you'll find the arts, food and music flourishing amidst Art Deco buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage-designated historic core. While you're here, take time to visit the port wine cellars where the city’s famous export is blended and stored then explore a turn-of-the-century bookstore, the neoclassical Stock Exchange Palace or the sprawling arts complex.
Tumbling from the newer sections of the city down to the banks of the Douro, you'll find Porto’s oldest quarter, Ribeira. Here you can feel contemporary one minute with starkly modern galleries and chic bistros, then ancient the next with narrow alleyways that are strung with laundry lines and worn stone stairways that connect the cobblestone streets. Wander the neighbourhood, from more commercial strips to residential back streets, where women chat and children play with soccer balls. Down by the Douro at Ribeira Square, you'll find that the streets open up and cafés set their tables out on the plaza.

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a wealth of sights, tastes and sounds. It's an ensemble of neighbourhoods both old and new, it’s a city full of history, culture and tradition. After the devastating earthquake that struck in 1755, reconstruction began and the rebuilt Baixa area quickly became one of the city's busiest districts. From there, you can glance up at São Jorge Castle on one hill while in another direction you'll find Chiado, one of the trendiest and most elegant neighbourhoods.
The spirit of Lisbon can be encapsulated by the soulful musical genre of fado which can best be enjoyed in Alfama, the city's oldest neighbourhood. Here you can enter one of the area's old-school taverns and listen to passionate renditions of Fado Vadio, sung by amateurs often after a round of aguardiente, an anise-flavoured liqueur.
Visiting Lisbon, also known as the City of Seven Hills, requires some huffing and puffing but you can opt for touring around in a tuk-tuk or take one of the four elevators to access the hilly neighbourhoods. The Santa Justa vertical lift, an iron tower, can whisk you from downtown to Carmo so you can see the historic Convento do Carmo, or you can take the ultra-steep streetcar-type Elevador da Glória to get up to the botanical gardens.

The Algarve region of Portugal is famous for its cosmopolitan air, clear blue sea and golden sand beaches that are surrounded by rugged cliffs. Portimao offers all this and more which is why some say the best way to experience this region is to simply sit still and forget the time. You can do just that in any number of public gardens or stroll the old town to discover hidden treasures you can get lost in.

The Mediterranean meets the Atlantic at the Strait of Gibraltar, a lively stretch of water 58 kilometres long and only 14.3 kilometres wide at its narrowest point. As the liquid border between Africa and Europe, the Strait of Gibraltar has always been the site of much political focus as well as maritime activity. Here, cultures collide but mostly coexist as the Brits, far from their own island kingdom, hold Gibraltar closely as they drink tea and ale in the Mediterranean climate. The Spaniards have long protected their own North African toehold Ceuta, a Spanish-controlled port city and beach town on a tongue of Morocco that juts into the Strait. American military planes and ships patrol in search of smugglers and terrorists. The Strait of Gibraltar seems a peaceful stretch of water on its surface but in truth is a potentially volatile mix.
Strategically located at the southern tip of Europe, facing Africa, Gibraltar offers a fascinating mix of cultures. With a history that includes Moorish, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English influences (among others), this tiny, 6.7-square-kilometer British Overseas Territory is most famous for the giant Jurassic limestone rock soaring above the territory’s main commercial and residential areas. The Rock contains an abundance of history (military and otherwise), not to mention significant flora and fauna, and a labyrinth of caves and tunnels.
Venture into Gibraltar’s densely populated streets for Spanish, British, Middle Eastern and Italian cuisine, as well as tax-free shopping on everything from luxury brands to handmade arts and crafts and artisanal edibles. Browsing and snacking around town is the perfect chance to hear Yanito, the singsong Spanish-English hybrid spoken here. There are also historic and holy places in Europa Point, and the Museum of Gibraltar provides an opportunity to learn about the region’s history and prehistory, as well as the migration habits of its birds and marine life.

There are more than two millennia of history to embrace in this port city in Spain's southeastern Murcia region. While Cartagena is famously home to the second-largest Roman amphitheatre on the Iberian Peninsula, the city is much more than just spectacular ancient ruins. In addition to Cartagena’s architecture and the amphitheatre, there are striking Art Nouveau buildings, neoclassical churches and ultramodern edifices throughout the city.
In the city, you can investigate the restored mediaeval fortress that's looking out on the bay from the city’s highest point, take a short trip to the historic Agrupa Vicenta Mines, visit the remarkable palm forest at Elche and tour the holy city of Caravaca.
You’ll also find many opportunities to shop for local and regional artisan wares between friendly tapas bars with breezy terraces that invite you to linger over drinks, coffee and snacks. The local restaurants offer typical Spanish tapas along with michirones (a spicy Murcian bean stew) and local spins on paella. Try grilled octopus, fried calamari, mussels and fresh fish which are some of the tasty benefits of the city’s perch beside the sea.

You'll find lively tapas bars around every corner where you can stop for a drink, a café amb llet (Catalan for espresso with steamed milk) or a snack, no matter the hour.
There are green spaces for picnics, long walks and respite from the hustle and bustle which are scattered throughout Barcelona's attractions from Gaudí's mosaic-decorated park to the neoclassical maze at the Laberint d'Horta. Take a short trip from Barcelona by car or train where you'll find luxury outlets, cava wineries, a mountaintop abbey and the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast await.

Beyond the region’s famous site of ancient Olympia, which is one of the most treasured remnants of the classical world, the Peloponnese gets little of the glory given to the Greek islands and Athens. A distinctly Greek welcome can be experienced here like nowhere else as the region reveals what it means to be Greek with traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, crystal blue seas and true hospitality of the people. In Greek, Xenos means "stranger" but the word also means "guest" and a respectful traveller will be treated like a favoured friend. In addition to Olympia, the Peloponnese offers lesser-known but majestic and ancient sites, natural wonders and an insight into the traditional rural life that still endures in this country. Take the time to explore and see as much as possible.

The port of Souda on the Aegean Sea is home to a Greek and NATO naval base which is located six kilometres from Chania, the second-largest city on Crete and the largest of the Greek Islands. Once you’re in Chania, set your compass for the historic waterfront with its famous Venetian Harbor dating to the 14th century. Walk along the breakwater to the restored 500-year-old lighthouse for views that are particularly photogenic from late afternoon until sunset. The atmospheric tangle of streets that is the Old Town is easily explored on foot, so why not stop at one of the many outdoor cafés for a bouyatsa (custard pastry) or a glass of Cretan red wine?
Soúda is also a great point for visiting Rethymnon, located about 54 kilometres to the east. Shaped by centuries of invasion, namely from the Venetians and Turks, its Fortezza was built by the Venetians in the late 16th century and captured by the Ottomans in 1646. The Old Town has the same kind of architectural character as Chania but on a smaller scale.

Antiquity lovers will find plenty to explore in the sunny port of Limassol, also the southernmost city in Europe. Despite the modern waterfront high-rises and palm-lined promenade, Limassol has an ancient core with its Old Town where you’ll find Limassol Castle. Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese (the name translates as "twelve islands"), draws more visitors than other Greek islands. Its capital, Rhodes Town, offers an enduring blend of history and architecture while the island's is filled with lushly forested hills. To the south, Lindos, is one of the most stunning villages in all of Greece and is watched over by a picture-perfect ancient ruin on the hill above.
The island owes its rich history to a good climate and a strategically valuable position between Asia and Europe. It also has a fine natural port where its former main attraction, an immense statue of the sun god Helios once stood. As one of the seven wonders of the world, the statue made Rhodes a must-visit destination for ancient world travellers until it collapsed in an earthquake in 226 B.C.E. However, even the statue’s ruins were grand enough to bring curious travellers to Rhodes for another 800 years until the metal pieces were melted and sold off by an occupying army.
Though many civilizations have left their mark on Rhodes, its independent spirit has endured and the island has managed to retain its natural beauty, from the mountain heights down to the gorgeous beaches and coves.

Kusadasi is the gateway to one of the most legendary cities of the ancient world, Ephesus. Here, St. Paul preached in its Great Theater while the Celsus Library survives as a testament to the city’s role as a centre of learning and culture. Not far from Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis (also known as the Temple of Diana), one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, once stood, drawing pilgrims from around the Mediterranean. While it no longer stands, it is possible to walk amongst its foundations and the remains of its towering columns. Other historic sites nearby include The House of Mary, which is believed to be the home of Jesus’s mother at the end of her life, and the Basilica of St. John which was constructed in the 6th century and marks the location of his tomb. Nearby, the Selcuk fortress reflects the period of Byzantine and Ottoman control of the region. From ancient wonders to holy sites, there are few ports in the Mediterranean as magical as Kusadasi.

The Dardanelles used to be called Hellespont, after Greek mythology’s mortal princess, Helle, who drowned in these treacherous waters after falling off the back of the flying golden ram. In another Greek myth, Leander swam across the strait, which was famously emulated in 1810 by the Romantic poet Lord Byron. These days the scenery is less dramatic than in those tales but there are notable landmarks along the shores to see and photograph.
Australians, New Zealanders and history buffs will take an interest in the Gallipoli Peninsula on the northern shore at the mouth of the Dardanelles. It was on this peninsula during the brutal Gallipoli Campaign, fought for eight months in 1915, that the legend of the Anzac spirit of courage, loyalty and friendship was born.
