A local merchant family, the Honma clan, came to dominate trade in the city and accrued a vast fortune that made them wealthier than some of the country's feudal lords. Day 9 Kobe, Japan

Docked: 07:00 - 19:00

Kobe is the fifth-largest city in Japan and is the capital city of Hyogo Prefecture on the southern side of the main island of Honshu. Its name comes from "kanbe", an archaic title for supporters of the city's Ikuta Shrine. With a population of about 1.5 million, the city is part of the Keihanshin (Keihanshin) metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto.

The earliest written records regarding the region come from the Nihon Shoki, which describes the founding of the Ikuta Shrine by Empress Jingu in AD 201. For most of its history, the area was never a single political entity, even during the Tokugawa Period, when the port was controlled directly by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Kobe did not exist in its current form until its founding in 1889.

Kobe was one of the cities to open for trade with the West following the end of the policy of seclusion and has since been known as a cosmopolitan port city. While the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake diminished much of Kobe's prominence as a port city, it remains Japan's fourth busiest container port. The city is the point of origin and namesake of Kobe Beef as well as the site of one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, Arima Onsen. Kobe is also your gateway to Kyoto, Japan's ancient imperial capital and the nation's cultural and spiritual centre.

Day 10 Kochi, Japan

Docked: 07:00 - 17:00

Kochi sits on the broad alluvial plain facing Urado Bay. This city in Shikoku takes its name from the great feudal castle that sits at its very heart. Completed in 1611, Kochi Castle was the seat of Yamauchi Kazutoyo, a noted warrior who supported Tokugawa Ieyasu in his successful quest to become Shogun. Tosa Province and Kochi Castle were Yamauchi's reward for faithful service. There is a historical irony here: 250 years later, a Kochi native son - a former low-ranked samurai and now ronin named Sakamoto Ryoma - played a pivotal role in bringing the Tokugawa Shogunate to an end and restoring the Emperor of Japan to political prominence. The prize once awarded for faithful service had become a hotbed of support for the Meiji Restoration.

Kochi is one of the wettest places in Japan - and a frequent target for cyclonic storms or typhoons. Southeast of the city, warm ocean currents washing against the Aki Mountains create a subtropical landscape of hibiscus, palm and ficus at Muroto-Anan Quasi-National Park.

Princess Cruises ‘Diamond Princess’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Hiroshima, Japan

Docked: 09:00 - 19:00

On August 6, 1945, human history was irrevocably altered when the American bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb was code-named "Little Boy," but its detonation left half the city in ruins and aflame. Today, Hiroshima is a monument not only to the destructive forces harnessed by men but also to the indomitable will of the human spirit to overcome tragedy. At the heart of the city lies Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. The gutted walls of the city's old Industry Promotion Hall and the skeletal frame that supported its copper dome vaporised in the blast are instantly recognisable symbols of Hiroshima.

Travellers to Hiroshima will discover a more serene note at nearby Miyajima Island. One of the top-three scenic spots of Japan, the island is home to the ancient Itsukushima Shrine, a designated National Treasure.

Day 12 Kanmon Straits, Japan

The Kanmon Straits or the Straits of Shimonoseki is the stretch of water separating Honshu and Kyushu, two of Japan's four main islands. On the Honshu side of the strait is Shimonoseki and on the Kyushu side is Kitakyushu, whose former city and present ward, Moji, gave the strait its "mon".

Day 14 Sasebo, Japan

Docked: 08:00 - 18:00

Sasebo lies on the western end of Japan and is a hub for foreigners due to the presence of a U.S. Navy base. The second largest city in Nagasaki Prefecture, Sasebo presents a vibrant option by the coast for visitors interested in urban and natural sightseeing.

The Huis Ten Bosch theme park, which is Dutch-themed, is a major attraction in the city. The rows of tulips combined with the Dutch-styled buildings will transport you to Europe instantly, and the regular fireworks shows add glamour to the visit.

Sasebo is home to the Sakai National Park 99 islands, known as Kujukushima. The area contains 208 uninhabited islands instead of the 99 mentioned in its name. To admire the landscape's beauty, there are three observation towers — Tenkaiho, Ishidake and Yumihari. Visitors can also get up close and personal with the islands on one of two touring boats at the Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort.

Most cities offer their own unique food, and Sasebo is no different, with Sasebo burgers all the rage. Dubbed "The Real Burger", a Sasebo burger consists of bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and a sunny-side-up egg. The burger was a product created to suit American Navy servicemen's appetites in the 1950s, and its popularity skyrocketed, resulting in today's long queues at many outlets.

Of course, the sacred and snow-capped Mount Fuji garners the most attention. Day 2 Osaka - Nara - Kyoto - Osaka

This morning head to Nara Park to spot more than a thousand deer, which are considered the messengers of the gods. These deer have become a city symbol and have been designated natural treasure status. Deer crackers are for sale around the park, and you'll find that some deer have learned to bow to visitors to ask to be fed.

You'll then visit the Todaiji Temple, one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara. The temple was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan.

Afterwards, travel to nearby Kyoto for some free time at leisure to explore the ancient capital or participate in an optional Kyoto sightseeing tour. Finish the day back in Osaka.

Optional Kyoto Half-Day Sightseeing Tour: 5,500 JPY

The tour includes a stop at Fushimi Inari Shrine, an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto. It's famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which straddle a network of trails behind its main buildings. The tour continues with a visit to Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), a Zen temple in northern Kyoto that has gold leaf-covered floors on the top two floors. The last stop of the tour is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, one of Kyoto's top sights and for a good reason: standing amid these soaring stalks of bamboo is like being in another world.

Day 3 Osaka - Takayama - Shirakawa Go - Nagano

Today is a fun day to visit the countryside of Japan on a trip of approximately 490km to see how local people live. First, visit Takayama Old Town and walk along Sannomachi Street, which survives in a beautiful state with many old homes, shops, and restaurants. Takayama was once a bustling hub drawing expert artisans, farmers and merchants from throughout the surrounding area, and Sanmachi, as well as Oshinmachi, preserve the traditional aesthetic of this time. Enter this district, and you step into the closest thing to the Edo period outside a historical drama.

Afterwards, visit Shirakawa-go - declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995; it’s famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some more than 250 years old.

Finish the day in the Nagano region, where you will check into your hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Tabino Hotel Lit Matsumoto Nagano or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Nagano - Lake Kawaguchiko - Mt Fuji - Tokyo

After breakfast, embark on a journey of approximately 330km, starting with a drive to Mt Fuji’s 5th Station. Located 2300m above sea level, Mt Fuji’s 5th Station offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a popular spot even for those who do not intend on climbing the mountain, and it features shrines, torii gates and souvenir shops.

Afterwards, continue to Lake Kawaguchiko to admire the scenery while enjoying a short cruise across the lake. The waters are overlooked by surrounding mountains, including Mt Fuji and Komagatake. Arrive in Toyko this afternoon, check into the hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Overnight: Hotel Lumiere Kasai or similar

Walk among the serene gardens surrounding the shrine as you listen to more details about its importance from your guide. Then visit the Imperial Palace, the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. A world away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this calm green oasis covers an impressive 1.15 square kilometres in the central Chiyoda Ward.

The tour will end around lunchtime, and you’re free to explore this fantastic city at your leisure in the afternoon.

Day 9 Kagoshima, Japan

Docked: 08:00 - 18:00

From the 12th century to the Meiji Restoration of 1868, Kagoshima was the chief stronghold of the mighty Shimazu clan. The city lies at the top of the Satsuma Peninsula, a mountainous, geothermal wonderland of hot springs and geysers. The area is also rich in modern Japanese history: Saigo Takamori and the Satsuma samurai were leaders of the Meiji Restoration that toppled the shogun and restored the Emperor to power in 1868. In 1877, dissatisfied with the new government's direction, Saigo led the Satsuma Rebellion, which ended in his death and the final defeat of the samurai.

The symbol of Kagoshima is Sakura Jima - the volcanic island that sits just offshore. The volcano has erupted over 30 times in recorded history.

Day 10 Nagasaki, Japan

Docked: 08:00 - 18:00

For most travellers, Nagasaki is a symbol of the horror and the inhumanity of war. An estimated 75,000 people perished in 1945 when the city became the second target of a nuclear attack. Today, Nagasaki's Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum draw visitors worldwide.

But this beautiful city in Kyushu offers other sights. Often described as the San Francisco of Japan, the city occupies verdant hills surrounded by a deep-water bay. For three centuries, Nagasaki was Japan's sole window into the world. The city is also celebrated as the setting for Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly."

Overnight: Princess Cruises ‘Diamond Princess’

Day 11 Busan, South Korea

Docked: 08:00 - 18:00

Nestled amidst awe-inspiring mountains, shimmering beaches, and rejuvenating hot springs, Busan, South Korea's vibrant second-largest city, unfolds as an enchanting port town offering many attractions. Embracing a diverse range of experiences, from laid-back tent bars and stylish designer cafes to bustling fish markets boasting a rich variety of marine life, Busan caters to every individual's preferences. The urban landscape is gracefully laced with rugged mountain ranges, accentuating the city's allure. At the same time, its global appeal is underscored by iconic events like the prestigious Busan International Film Festival, making it a captivating meeting point for people worldwide.

Overnight: Princess Cruises ‘Diamond Princess’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 12 Sasebo, Japan

Overnight: Princess Cruises ‘Diamond Princess’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 13 Shimonoseki & Kanmon Straits, Japan

Docked: 08:00 - 18:00

Shimonoseki is the westernmost city on Japan's main island, Honshu. At the island's tip are panoramic views from the Kaikyō Yume Tower observation deck. Kaikyokan Aquarium has penguins, dolphins and around 100 species of blowfish. Nearby Karato Market is also known for its seafood stalls, and Shimonoseki is known to culinary daredevils as the mecca of fugu, the delicious and potentially lethal pufferfish. Kanmon Bridge and the undersea Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel link the city to Kyūshū, the big island across the Kanmon Straits.

The Kanmon Straits, or the Straits of Shimonoseki, is the stretch of water separating Honshu and Kyushu, two of Japan's four main islands. On the Honshu side of the strait is Shimonoseki, and on the Kyushu side is Kitakyushu, whose former city and present ward, Moji, gave the strait its "mon".

Overnight: Princess Cruises ‘Diamond Princess’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 14 Beppu, Japan

Docked: 09:00 - 16:00

Ominous steam rises from the Japanese island of Kyushu, where Beppu lies in wait. But not to worry - this legendary tourist town is renowned for its healing geothermal waters and spas. Overlooking Beppu Bay to its east and protected from the west by dramatic mountain peaks, this exotic city is blanketed with misty turquoise waters and elegant Japanese foliage. Its main attraction is the "Hells of Beppu," a collection of nine stunning onsen, or hot springs, some of which feature geysers and colourful waters in shades from white to copper to sapphire. The springs' names, including Kamado-Jigoku (Boiling Hell) and Oniyama-Jigoku (Demon Mountain Hell), are somewhat misleading as all of the hot springs are breathtakingly beautiful rather than frightening - though your nose may cower and crinkle at the sulphurous odour they emit!

Overnight: Princess Cruises ‘Diamond Princess’

Day 15 Wakayama, Japan

Docked: 08:00 - 17:00

The bustling port of Shimotsu is the gateway to Wakayama Prefecture and its capital city. With over 372 miles (600 km) of coastline, all of the delights of the sea are on offer, including snorkelling, swimming or scuba diving off one of its many white-sand beaches, marvelling at the underwater world on display at the aquarium in the Museum of Natural History, and watching the intricate process of preparing a massive tuna in the Kuroshio Market. Known as 'Onsen Heaven', Wakayama is home to various geothermal bathing experiences, a centuries-long treasured Japanese tradition. Nearby are the hilltop Wakayama Castle, with park-like grounds, and the resort island of Wakayama Marina City. For those looking for a more active experience, there is everything from animal encounters at Adventure World to a walking tour along the sacred paths of the 1,200-year-old Koyasan monastery complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When hunger strikes, try some Wakayama ramen made with a tasty soy sauce. And remember that the first matcha green tea ice cream was created in Wakayama City, so be sure to treat yourself.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER

Tour Guide:

Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:

An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Gratuities (tips) are not included for the cruise staff's services throughout this tour's cruise component. Princess Cruises is an internationally registered company & operates to US & European standards, both of which have an economy driven by a tipping culture. Gratuities are expected on your cruise and will be charged to your onboard account from USD$16.00 to USD$17.00 per person per day. If you have any questions regarding the gratuities on your cruise, please speak to the guest services staff onboard the ship.

Visas

Japan

A tourist visa is not required for Australian or New Zealand citizens visiting Japan for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc. that does not include remunerative activities.

Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Contact the nearest embassy or consulate of the Republic of Korea for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules.

South Korea

Australian passport holders no longer need to apply for a Korean Electronic Travel Authorisation (K-ETA), under a temporary exemption in place until 31 December 2024.

Important:

• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.

• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Please note:

• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.

• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
