Day 6 Valencia, Spain

(Docked from 08:00 to 17:00)

Valencia is now the third-largest city in Spain however was once the capital of the Kingdom of Valencia which, during its golden age in the 14th and 15th centuries, eclipsed Catalonia in importance. The city still has prosperous air, thanks in part to its worldwide trade in citrus fruits and vegetables. There are certain advantages to life in "The Big Orange" as few cities in Spain with a rich artistic past and present have such gorgeous public buildings. You also can't forget the perfect Mediterranean climate which stretches to the beaches and the fine mediaeval centro histórico.

Valencia is fiercely proud of its deep-rooted traditions, most notably the great spring fiesta of Fallas where allegorical figures are set afire amid world-class firework displays and the extraordinary mascletá (best described as a symphony in explosions). Among Spaniards, Valencia has a reputation for exuberance and sensuality, an inordinate fondness for staying up late, and is emerging as one of the country's most forward-thinking food cities.

Day 7 Alicante, Spain

(Docked from 07:00 to 15:00)

Fresh sea breezes, mountain backdrops and vibrant locals have made this magical city a must-see for both international tourists and residents of Spain alike.

It's easy to slip into the local rhythm as you spend your day exploring everything from the Old Town and Santa Bárbara Castle to the trendiest of Spanish stores. Explore the marble Explanada de España, an iconic and bustling boulevard dotted with palm trees, before taking advantage of the proximity to the sea by dining on the freshest seafood where you can try one of Alicante's many traditional rice dishes. Don’t forget to sample the outstanding regional wines, which are also very tasty souvenirs.

Even just a day here will open your eyes to the natural beauty and subtle charms that make the proud and elegant Alicante a gem of the Costa Blanca.

Day 8 Malaga, Spain

(Docked from 07:00 to 17:00)

While Málaga was long considered just a stopover on the way to southern Spain’s Costa del Sol beach resorts, in recent years a buzz has developed around the Andalucian city. There is a brand-new $100 million port promenade that's filled with restaurants and a bold new branch of Paris’s Centre Pompidou that has been built in the form of a colourful glass cube. A handful of other major new museums include one devoted to one of the city’s most famous sons, Pablo Picasso. Where once many buildings were dilapidated, an entire swath of the historic centre is now pedestrianised and filled with shoppers, diners and street musicians. Tapas bars with outdoor tables line the old town’s Calle Strachan while a boom in fine dining is also taking place. The city makes a fine base for day trips to many of Andalucía’s most famous sites and, unlike many southern Spanish cities, Málaga doesn’t really shut down over the hot summer months.

Overnight: Holland America ‘Oosterdam’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Seville (Cadiz) , Spain

(Docked from 08:00 to 18:00)

Hanging off the southwestern edge of Spain, Cádiz is Europe’s oldest continually inhabited city with a history stretching back 3,000 years. The city’s fond nickname, la tacita de plata ("little silver cup"), alludes to its curious geography as it juts out on a long peninsula into a sheltered bay. Old town Cádiz is a warren of cobbled streets where the houses, painted white or dusty ochre, have the weather-beaten look of a place subjected to centuries of wind and salt. This ancient city has everything that matters from a great food market to a theatre (the Teatro Falla, a grand Art Nouveau Moorish gem), a gorgeous cathedral and a picturesque beach.

Day 11 Madeira (Funchal), Portugal

(Docked from 08:00 to 17:00)

When Portuguese navigators set foot on the island of Madeira in 1419, they were convinced that they had arrived at the Garden of Eden. Today, the experience is no different for cruise passengers docking in Funchal, Madeira’s largest city and the capital of a namesake autonomous region. Madeira’s consistently warm weather and volcanic mountains are lush with tropical flowers and gardens that originally drew European settlers whose influence gave rise to much of what it’s known for. This includes Madeira wine, poncha (a traditional drink made of distilled sugarcane, honey and lemon) and handiwork such as embroidery.

You'll find Funchal's streets are paved with black and white mosaics, there's a grand seafront promenade, old-fashioned shops, and restaurants and cafés that are housed in terracotta-roofed buildings. Although the majority of places of interest are close to the Atlantic Ocean’s pebbled shore, some of the city’s most worthwhile attractions are situated above sea level so why not take a cable car to the peaks that rise over the harbour for a bird’s-eye perspective of the island?

Visas

Europe

A tourist visa is not required for stays up to 90 days if travelling on an Australian or New Zealand passport.

United States
• If travelling on an Australian Passport, an ESTA (Visa Waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA Visa Waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA. For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/
Please note: Due to recent changes in the USA Immigration policies, Qantas Tours recommends all travellers visit US Customs & Border Protection.

Canada
Some flights may be required to transit in Canada. Australian and New Zealand passport holders must apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before travelling to or transiting in Canada by air.
Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
