Arrive early morning in Rabaul, a township in the East New Britain province and the largest of Papua New Guinea’s beautiful offshore islands. The town lies in the shadow of three volcanoes with the active Mt Tavurvur volcano frequently putting on a display for spectators, a camera is a must to record the occasional plume of smoke rising from its peak. Just outside Rabaul, you'll find the only observatory in this region that monitors volcanic activity. It's situated on a hilltop that offers superb views over the ocean, town and the surrounding volcanoes. Around the bay is the original Rabaul Airport which was destroyed in the volcanic eruptions of 1994, this was an important Japanese airfield in World War II with the remains of a Japanese Betty bomber clearly visible. Further north of Rabaul is the former Japanese submarine base which was used in wartime to ferry supplies and troops. South of town, towards Kokopo, are the Japanese barge tunnels where, in the main tunnel, the remains of five rusting barges are lined up end-to-end.
The town is also well known for its wartime history as it was occupied by the Japanese during World War II so you'll find the Japanese Peace Memorial and Rabaul 1942-45 Memorial monuments honouring those who defended New Britain from allied attack. Simpson Harbour is a watery graveyard of downed planes and ships and is now a popular scuba diving spot while the so-called Yamamoto Bunker offers a lingering reminder of Japan’s wartime presence.

Blessed with spectacular natural beauty and rich cultural history, you’ll arrive early in the morning to the island of Guam in Micronesia, in the western South Pacific. Guam is known as “the small island with a big spirit” and, when you visit, you’ll understand why. The dramatic coastline and white sand beaches are framed by coral reefs and crystal clear waters, while historical sites are plentiful.
Head to to Apra Harbour, the island’s port, to discover beautiful waters, underwater history, and historic buildings dating back to Spanish rule. Close to the port of Apra, you’ll find one of the island’s best-known landmarks, the Asan Overlook. Carved into the walls, this World War II memorial site has the names of the men and women who endured the war during the Japanese occupation. You’ll also find breathtaking views over the Apra Harbour.
Two Lovers Point is another must-see attraction in the area as the tower offers an incredible view along the Philippine Sea and into central Guam. The island isn’t short of beaches where you can relax and unwind so for swimming and snorkelling, the beaches of Tumon Bay offer bright white sands and clear, calm waters. Close by in Ypao Beach Park, you’ll find long stretches of sand and grassy spots that are ideal for games, while Tolofofo Beach on the southeastern coast is one of only four green sand beaches in the world.
Stop by the ‘Guam Zoological, Botanical & Marine Gardens’ which are home to more than 20 species of endangered animals, as well as animals from all over the world. Here you can enjoy a peaceful walk through the botanical garden, meet the animals or get hands-on and feed the sharks.
For history buffs, the Pacific War Museum and Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica provide an insight into the Island through different periods. Head to the South Pacific Memorial Peace Park which symbolises peace and friendship between Japan and the USA, here you’ll find a 15-metre-high tower representing hands praying for eternal peace. The island is just 48km long and less than 14km wide so if you want an insight into what life was like in the early days of the island, make time to visit the cultural village at Gef Pa’go in Inarajan. You can also visit the Valley of the Latte in Talofofo to see the past come alive through re-enactments before departing in the early evening.

Arrive early in the morning in the captivating city of Nagasaki on the southwestern coast of Japan. Nestled between the tranquil waters of Omura Bay and surrounded by lush green mountains, Nagasaki offers an enchanting blend of ancient tradition and modern innovation. History enthusiasts will be drawn to the Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park, where sombre reminders of the city's tragic past are juxtaposed with messages of hope and peace. Wander through the charming streets of Glover Garden, a historic district showcasing Western-style houses from the 19th century, and visit the striking Suwa Shrine which is perched atop a hill with stunning views of the city and bay.
Food lovers will be delighted by Nagasaki's unique cuisine with signature dishes like the savoury noodle soup Champon and the delectable sponge cake Castella. Whether you're seeking cultural immersion, scenic vistas or a taste of authentic Japanese hospitality, Nagasaki promises an unforgettable travel experience.
Overnight: Cunard Line ‘MS Queen Elizabeth’
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Arrive early morning on the southernmost island of Kyushu, near the city of Miyazaki. With parks and botanical gardens, its outdoor appeal attracts everyone from surfers to golfers. Miyazaki’s weather coaxes you into the fresh air as its temperatures are among the warmest in the entire country. So too does Seagaia, a vast resort which grants most of your outdoor wishes along seven miles of pine-scented shore. Here you can play tennis or golf, go fishing, horse riding or cycling. For a dash more adrenalin try scuba diving, jet-skiing or paragliding.
The Aburatsu Port is 30 miles or so from Miyazaki in an area linked with the enigmatic Emperor Jimmu, who is the first emperor of Japan. The Miyazaki Shrine is dedicated to the emperor and his parents, and is believed to trace back to the start of Emperor Jimmu’s reign around 2,600 years ago. The cedar wood shrine stands in attractive gardens that include a 400-year-old wisteria.
Another site linked to the first emperor is Heiwadai Park with a notable Peace Tower landmark which was built to mark the 2,600th anniversary of the mythological foundation of Japan. It may be something of an irony that the Peace Tower was built using stones from across Asia in 1940 to symbolise a unified world during the unparalleled conflict of World War II. At one end of the park, the Haniwa Gardens are dotted with over 400 replica ‘haniwa’ or burial statues arranged on mossy mounds. Depicting warriors, dancers, animals and houses, these types of clay figurines were once placed in burial mounds.
Explore the Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum which showcases a number of local and national artists from the Edo Period (1603-1868), as well as international works.
It’s highly recommended to cross over to Aoshima Island which is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The island is around a mile in circumference and fringed with white beaches, if the tide is out when you visit then you’ll see a phenomenon known as the Devil’s Washboard. This is a naturally formed expanse of basalt rock that looks as though it’s been ploughed in perfectly straight lines. Pass through a red Tori gate on the beach and discover a shrine in its centre, tucked away amidst the subtropical jungle.
Before departing in the afternoon, you might devote an hour or two to the Miyazaki City Phoenix Zoo. It’s home to the largest flock of flamingos in Japan, as well as various animals from across Asia and Africa including Indian elephants, chimpanzees, lions, giraffe and zebra.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.
Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
