Top-quality seafood (courtesy of its position on the Puget Sound). A beautifully balanced blend of city parks, waterfront walks, and beaches, that set the scene for all sorts of outdoor adventures. Add to that a long-established cultural offering that includes concert halls, art galleries, and museums, and it’s easy to see why Seattle is considered by many to be the perfect place to put down roots, (even more so if you’re a fan of craft beer and coffee).

Day 25 Ketchikan, Alaska

Arrives: Morning - Departs: Afternoon

Tiny Ketchikan is just three miles long and no more than 10 blocks wide, but here you can be sure to find Alaska’s busiest waterfront buzzing with boat planes, fishing boats, pleasure craft, and busy fishermen. Ketchikan port guide. Once colonised by Tlingit and Haida tribes, Ketchikan is a thriving fishing town with colourful stilted houses, a rich Alaskan culture and a throng of trawlers hauling in fresh crab and salmon. Arts thrive here and museums celebrating the town’s history are abundant. Some of the best seafood you’ll sample in the Great Land will have been plucked directly from Ketchikan’s waters and served in its restaurants just hours later.

A detail that only magnifies the appeal of this enchanting port call on your Alaska cruise. While other towns have their origins firmly rooted in the region’s gold rush years, Ketchikan’s connection with its native population is still at the heart of its community. You’ll find Alaska’s largest collection of totem poles among its many welcoming attractions, along with heritage experiences expanding on the beliefs, customs and pastimes of Alaska’s earliest settlers.

Overnight: Cunard Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 26 Sitka, Alaska

Arrives: Morning - Departs: Evening

Sitka is a hidden beauty on the east coast of Baranof Island in southeast Alaska. Towered over by snowy mountains in the distance, it has previously been known as the Indian River Park and Totem Park. A city that appears to have sprung up in the most unlikely of locations, Sitka is one of Alaska’s most picturesque port calls. Its location celebrates everything that makes this otherworldly US state unique: snow-encrusted mountains, densely forested wilderness and intensely sapphire waters that radiate with glass-like shine.

Yet the city is more than a basecamp for outdoor adventurers. Sitka enjoys a blended history as diverse as its scenery. Russian, Tlingit and American settlers have all imprinted on the city. Art and culture thrive as richly as Pacific salmon here, and while small compared to other Alaskan communities, Sitka boasts countless treasures for visitors to admire.

Overnight: Cunard Queen Elizabeth

Day 27 Glacier Bay (Scenic Cruising), Alaska

With snow-capped peaks, abundant wildlife and shimmering glaciers, it’s no wonder Glacier Bay National Park is the crowning jewel of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Spanning 3.3 million acres, as part of a 25-million-acre World Heritage Site, a Glacier Bay National Park cruise reveals some of the planet’s most remarkable tidewater glaciers. There’s so much to take in on a Glacier Bay National Park cruise, that it’s hard to know where to begin.

Towering mountains, gargantuan icebergs and majestic glaciers stretch as far as the eye can see, disappearing onto the horizon in every direction. It’s a thrilling sight to experience from the deck of a cruise ship, or snuggled under a blanket in the warmth of your stateroom balcony, as you silently watch the world go by.

The park is home to over 1,000 glaciers, the majority of which nestle in the surrounding mountains, connecting land to the sky like nature’s skyscrapers. Soaring to 15,000 feet, Glacier Bay’s ranges are among the highest coastal peaks in the world; their abundant snowfall offering the perfect breeding ground for glaciers to take shape.

One of the highlights of visiting Glacier Bay National Park is watching the prolific calving of these shimmering ice giants. Towering hundreds of feet above the water, as well as stretching a hundred feet below, huge jagged pinnacles routinely break off in thunderous explosions, resulting in flotillas of icebergs. It’s an awe-inspiring spectacle.

Overnight: Cunard Queen Elizabeth

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 28 Juneau, Alaska

Beneath an ice field that never melts, on a waterway that never freezes, Juneau is the unusual and disarmingly beautiful capital of Alaska. The Mendenhall Glacier is a not-to-be-missed attraction. Despite its status as Alaska’s capital, Juneau’s urban area spans just 14 square miles, but its appeal far exceeds its city limits. Frequently cited as Alaska’s most scenic city, Juneau is nature’s playground, and what a playground it is. Waters abound with humpbacks and orcas, forested trails lead to snow-ensconced mountains, and the ever-present majestic eagles circling overhead.

The town that kick-started Alaska’s gold rush is rich with treasures of all varieties, from native Tlingit history and excellent seafood to an abundance of outdoor pursuits. It’s little wonder that most of Juneau’s residents arrived for a short stay and decided never to leave. Arrives: Morning - Departs: Late evening

Overnight: Cunard Queen Elizabeth

Day 29 Skagway, Alaska

Arrives: Morning - Departs: Evening

Gateway to the Klondike, with highlights including White Summit Pass and the Yukon Suspension Bridge. The gold rush coastal town of Skagway, Alaska, was previously a lawless Wild West outpost. Skagway is Alaska’s gateway to the Klondike where in the late 1890s more than 100,000 prospectors arrived in search of gold. Even today, frontier-style saloon-style buildings still line the town’s streets, an enduring reminder of this key period in Alaska’s gold rush history.

While feeling as though you’ve somehow fallen through time and into the Wild West is undoubtedly part of Skagway’s appeal, there’s so much more to admire, discover and experience on a port call to this southerly part of the Great Land. John Wayne’s classic motion picture “Into Alaska” was filmed nearby, and the area has inspired several novels. Skagway’s surroundings are nothing short of magnificent. The piercing waters hugging its shores are outdone only by the frosted peaks painted on the horizon. It’s a vista best savoured from a vintage passenger car on the area’s famous White Pass and Yukon Route railway.

One of the most dramatic locations in the USA, Tracy Arm Fjord is an impressive tourist attraction southwest of the Alaskan city of Juneau. CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Alaska
In Alaska, May and September offer a transition between seasons, with May marking the onset of spring and September hinting at the arrival of fall. In May, temperatures are generally mild, ranging from about 5°C to 15°C, though they can dip lower, especially in the northern regions or at higher elevations. The weather is often sunny, but there's still a chance of occasional rain or snow, particularly in the mountains. By September, temperatures begin to cool, averaging between 0°C and 10°C, with the possibility of frost in some areas. Rain becomes more frequent, and in the far north, it may even start snowing. The daylight hours in both months are long, with May having up to 16-18 hours of daylight, and September gradually decreasing.

Seattle
In Seattle, May and September feature mild and pleasant weather, though with noticeable differences as the city transitions from spring to fall. In May, temperatures typically range from 10°C to 18°C, with more sunshine compared to the earlier months of spring. It's a great time to enjoy outdoor activities, but there can still be occasional rain showers as Seattle is known for its light, persistent rainfall. By September, temperatures cool slightly, averaging between 12°C and 20°C. The weather remains relatively dry, especially in the early part of the month, but as fall approaches, there's an increased chance of rain. Daylight hours are still fairly long in May, but by September, they begin to shorten as the city heads into autumn.

Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, May and September typically feature warm, pleasant weather, with May ushering in the start of the warmer season and September offering late summer conditions. In May, temperatures usually range from 15°C to 22°C, with some days reaching higher, especially in inland areas. The weather is generally dry and sunny, though coastal areas may experience cooler temperatures due to ocean breezes. By September, temperatures tend to be warmer, averaging between 18°C and 30°C, and sometimes even higher during heatwaves. It's still a dry month, with plenty of sunshine, but coastal areas can offer a more comfortable escape from the heat. Both months are great for outdoor activities, as the city enjoys mostly clear skies and mild conditions.

Cabo San Lucas
In Cabo San Lucas, April and October offer contrasting yet pleasant weather, with April being part of the dry season and October marking the transition into fall. In April, temperatures are warm, ranging from around 18°C to 30°C, with plenty of sunshine and minimal rainfall. It’s an excellent time for outdoor activities like beach outings, as the humidity is still relatively low, making it comfortable. By October, temperatures remain warm, averaging between 22°C and 34°C, but with higher humidity and a greater chance of rain, especially towards the latter part of the month. The sea breeze keeps the coastal areas more bearable, but it’s still hot overall, particularly in the inland regions. Both months offer plenty of sunshine, though October might bring occasional tropical storms.

Guatemala
In Guatemala, April and October are quite different in terms of weather, with April being the tail end of the dry season and October marking the start of the rainy season. In April, temperatures typically range from 20°C to 30°C, with plenty of sunshine and very little rainfall. The heat can be intense in the lowland areas, while the highlands remain cooler and more pleasant. It’s a great time to explore the country, as the weather is generally dry and ideal for outdoor activities. By October, temperatures are slightly cooler, averaging between 18°C and 26°C, with more frequent rain showers, especially in the afternoons and evenings. The rain is often heavy but short-lived, and the humidity increases, making the atmosphere feel warmer. October also brings lush green landscapes due to the rains, especially in the mountainous regions.

Panama
In Panama, April and October experience warm, tropical weather, with notable differences between the two months. In April, temperatures typically range from 24°C to 32°C, as it's the tail end of the dry season. The weather is hot and humid, with little rainfall, especially in coastal and lowland areas. It's a great time for beach activities and outdoor adventures, though it can be quite warm, especially during midday. By October, temperatures remain similar, ranging from 24°C to 31°C, but the weather becomes more unpredictable as it's the peak of the rainy season. There’s a significant increase in rainfall, often in the form of heavy, afternoon showers or thunderstorms. The humidity also rises, making the atmosphere feel hotter, but the lush green landscape from the rains offers a beautiful contrast to the dry season. Despite the rain, October still sees plenty of warm weather, especially in the mornings.

Curacao and Aruba
In October, both Curaçao and Aruba enjoy warm, tropical weather, with temperatures typically ranging from 26°C to 31°C. These islands, located in the southern Caribbean, are outside the typical hurricane belt, so while they may experience occasional showers, they don't usually face the same level of rainfall as other parts of the Caribbean. October is part of the rainy season for these islands, but the showers are usually brief, often in the form of short, heavy bursts in the afternoon or evening. The humidity can feel higher during this month, but the consistent trade winds help keep the air more comfortable. With plenty of sunshine and warm sea temperatures, it's still a great time for beach activities, though visitors should be prepared for the occasional rain shower.

Miami
In Miami, April and October feature warm, tropical weather with some differences as the city transitions between seasons. In April, temperatures typically range from 22°C to 30°C, with pleasant warmth and lower humidity compared to the summer months. It’s a great time to enjoy outdoor activities, with plenty of sunshine and minimal rainfall, although brief showers can still occur. By October, temperatures remain warm, averaging between 24°C and 31°C, but the humidity increases significantly as it is part of the rainy season. Rainfall becomes more frequent, with afternoon thunderstorms common, though they are often short-lived. Despite the rain, there is still plenty of sunshine, and the weather remains warm and suitable for beach activities, though it can feel hotter due to the humidity.
