Day 2 Taipei & Surroundings Day Tour

This morning depart Taipei and travel to the nearby Pingxi district where you will enjoy a quick ride along the Pingxi Branch Line - an 8-mile stretch of narrow-gauge railroad that runs alongside the Keelung River. Taking a ride on the Pingxi Line is like taking a step back in time and is one of the most popular day trips from Taiwan.

Step of the train in the town of Shifen, which is a popular town for launching sky lanterns. Sky lanterns are a Taiwanese tradition and Pingxi district is one of the only places where you are allowed to launch them. The paper lanterns inscribed with one's hopes for the coming year are launched into the sky and the preferred place to launch them is right on the tracks which makes for some great people watching. Here you will have the opportunity to launch a sky lantern (4 travellers to one sky lantern).

Afterwards continue to the small mountainous village of Jiufen, made famous largely due to its similarity to the village in Spirited Away, arguably Hayao Miyazaki’s most popular movie. Here you will enjoy time at leisure to explore Jiufen and have lunch (not included. We suggest you explore the picturesque Old Street which is a narrow alleyway lined up with small food stalls, tea houses, souvenir shops, and pottery stores. The most picturesque tea house in Jiufen is A-Mei Teahouse. This multi-story teahouse is strategically located just a little off the main street, perched on top of a hill. From their balcony, you can admire the picturesque view in front of you, Keelung Mountain to the right and the Northern shores of Taiwan on the left.

Afterwards continue back to Taipei and finish the day back at your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day 3 Taipei Sightseeing - Hualien - Hualien Night Market

Today head for some more sightseeing in Taipei before continuing onwards towards Hualien City on the rugged and beautiful East Coast of Taiwan.

The first stop in Taipei will be the National Palace of Museum which boasts the world's largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art and artefacts, dating back more than 7,000 years. After visiting Longshan Temple, which is one of the most famous temples in Taiwan. After driving past the Presidential Building before arriving at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, a national monument and tourist attraction erected in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China.

Continue onwards to Hualien City (approx 170km) and enjoy a local lunch along the way. On arrival, check into your hotel, where you may enjoy some time at leisure. Later this evening, take a short trip to the Hualien (Dongdamen) Night Market. Opened in 2015, the Hualien Night Market is the largest (and certainly most entertaining) market on the East Coast of Taiwan. Also known as the Dongdamen Night Market, the sprawling wide-laned marketplace is a must-visit experience when spending an evening in Hualien. With over 400 vendors at the night market, the amount of food on offer is incredible. And it isn’t just Taiwanese food either; you can find items from mainland China, America, Thailand, Japan and numerous other regions as well. Due to the enormous amount of food on offer and the variety you can sample, it is an easy place to get a unique, inexpensive dinner (not included).

Please note:
• Due to the Taiwan earthquake that hit Hualien City on 3rd April 2024, access to the city is limited and the nearby Taroko Gorge is closed. The Taiwan government is working to restore access to Taroko Gorge with the goal to have it open in 2025.
• If Taroko Gorge is not open by the time you travel, you will skip Hualien City and Taroko Gorge. Instead, you will travel by high-speed train from Taipei to Taitung to enjoy a 2-night stay and alternative sightseeing to explore the beautiful countryside of the East Coast of Taiwan.

Day 4 Hualien - Taroko National Park - Shitiping - Taitung City

Today, head out for an exciting journey into Taiwan’s most famous National Park. Taroko National Park is a natural wonderland nestled in the heart of Taiwan. This enchanting destination offers a mesmerizing fusion of awe-inspiring marble cliffs, verdant forests, and meandering turquoise rivers. Here you will enjoy the opportunity to walk through winding trails that lead you through majestic gorges, ancient shrines, and cascading waterfalls. You will also enjoy a chance to walk along the impressive suspension bridge, which is 196 metres long and 153 metres above the Liwu Valley.

Afterwards, enjoy a local lunch and then continue onwards to Shitiping on the coast, where you will find a huge, well-developed sea erosion terrace. The marine bench, raised coral reefs, sea ditches, and sea cliffs can be easily spotted, among which the pothole landscape is the best in Taiwan. Finish the day in Taitung City on the south East Coast of Taiwan, where you will check in for an evening at leisure.

Please note:

Day 5 Taitung - Fangliao - Kaohsiung

This morning is free at leisure to relax or explore the nearby Taitung Forest Park, nicknamed ‘Black Forest’ by residents for its immense dark beefwood trees. E-bikes are available at an additional cost within the park for those who would like to explore the numerous trails by e-bike.

Late this morning, check out and head to the Taitung train station. Along the way, stop by the Sugar Factory Cultural and Creative Park, where visitors can explore local aboriginal handicrafts and experience the culture of the sugar industry.

Upon arrival at the train station, board the iconic ‘Breezy Blue’ train. Breezy Blue is a 2021 refurbished train from the 1950s that glides along the southern coast of Taiwan, passing by many forgotten stations. The “romantic blue” train evokes nostalgic memories for the locals who commuted to work and school on the blue diesel-powered train in the past. Serious work and research were done to ensure that travellers can enjoy the most authentic train experience. Everything from the exterior colours of the train to the interior setup was refurbished to recreate the nostalgic train experience. One of the highlights of the train ride is the open windows as you can feel the breeze as the train chugs through the island along the beautiful south coast, taking in the beautiful ocean and mountain views the whole way.

The train terminates at Fangliao Station, where you will be met and transferred to the nearby city of Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung is a massive port city in southern Taiwan. It's home to many skyscrapers, such as the 248m-tall Tuntex Sky Tower, and is known for its diversity of parks. Its focal point is the Love River, with walking paths and cafes along its banks and cruise boats navigating its waters. Shopping options range from high-end malls to the Liuhe and Ruifeng night markets.

Day 7 Chiayi - Alishan - Chiayi

This morning, after breakfast, you will visit the Hinoki Village. Hinoki Village is a large-scale Japanese-style wooden historical building complex and one of the key attractions in Chiayi City. After years of restoration and planning, the 28 cypress houses carrying historical memories, some of which are used as cafes, toy museums, or various cultural and creative shops, have injected new life into the cladding of historic sites, allowing the old culture to be preserved and new stories continue to stack.

Afterwards, continue into the mountains to the famous Alishan National Scenic Area. Here you can explore the beautiful natural surroundings, including lush forests, ancient trees, and picturesque walking trails. On some days, the clouds are so dense and thick that the mountaintops appear like islands on the cloud ocean. Alishan is also famous for its high mountain Oolong tea, so on the way back to Chiayi, you will visit a local tea shop and enjoy a tea ceremony.

Finish the day back in Chiayi, where you will enjoy an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Orange Hotel or similar

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8 Chiayi - Sun Moon Lake - Taipei

Gratuities (tips) are not included for the services of the tour leader (when available) and driver throughout the tour. The recommended tip is $150 NT (approx $7 AUD) per person per day. This covers the guide/leader and the driver and will be collected on tour.

Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Sightseeing
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Taiwan has restored the visa-exempt entry scheme for nationals of designated countries, including Australia. Please see Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs website for the visa-exempt entry requirements and restrictions.

You won't need a visa for Taiwan if you meet all these conditions:

  • You'll only stay for up to 90 days
  • You're visiting for tourism or business
  • You have a confirmed return or onward air ticket
  • Your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of your entry
  • You're not travelling on an emergency passport

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Schedule of fees

Voluntary Changes
This includes booking changes requested by you, including but not limited to those changes requiring an airline ticket or a Purchase Confirmation reissue.
• Changes - $100 AUD per booking and any additional charges applied by the airline/cruise company/accommodation/other travel providers.

Name Changes Due To Passenger Error
• If the incorrect name has been provided, charges of $100 AUD per booking and any additional charges applied by the airline/cruise company/accommodation/other travel providers.

Supplier Fees
In the event the tour package you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the tour due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event we are unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee.
