Overview

Discover the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ from the comfort of a Princess Cruise ship in 2026 on this fantastic Japan Explorer Cruise package. Enjoy the cultural wealth, the elegant architecture, the delicious cuisine and the blend of the country’s ancient and modern styles.

Start your trip in Tokyo, with a day at leisure. Today, you can see some iconic destinations in this populous city: Meiji Shrine near Harajuku Station, the impressive Shibuya Crossing and the elegant Tokyo Imperial Palace in Chiyoda District. Alternatively, you could visit some animal cafes. In the unique Tokyo invention, ‘petting-zoo-meets-cafe’, you can come up close to animals from capybaras to hedgehogs.

On board the Princess Diamond, you can enjoy performers at the Atrium or a whole production show in the state-of-the-art theatre. This ship offers the ultimate relaxation at the Izumi Japanese Bath, the largest of its kind at sea (charges apply). It has five different dining venues: Vivaldi, Savoy, Pacific Moon, Santa Fe, and the bigger International Dining Room. Specialty restaurants onboard are Sterling Steakhouse, Kai Sushi and Sabatini's Italian Restaurant.

Jump on board the Princess Diamond for the next 10 nights (Itinerary 1) and embark on a trip of a lifetime: See the "Hells of Beppu," a collection of seven onsen or hot springs. Some feature geysers and colourful waters in shades from white to copper to sapphire. In Hiroshima, see its Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. See Shimonoseki, a charming coastal city on the western tip of Japan's main island. In South Korea’s Busan, enjoy the contrast of high-rise towers with ancient Buddhist temples and the serene grounds of Yongdusan Park. Travel to Nagasaki, where you can see the beautiful Meganebashi Bridge, enjoy a trip up Mount Inasa or visit the stunning Nagasaki Peace Park. Dock in the scenic port of Aburatsu, and you could travel 45km into Miyazaki’s spectacular Haniwa Garden, a photo opportunity like no other, with 400 replica burial statues. Next, stop in Kochi, where you can see the imposing castle, the beautiful Chikurinji Temple and Godaisan Park. Step into the quaint Mikimoto Pearl Island in Toba or enjoy some quiet time at the Shinmei Shrine, dedicated to the Japanese solar deity, Amaterasu.

If you choose Itinerary 2, the Diamond Princess will be your home away from home for the next 11 nights. After a stop in Hiroshima, you will see lovely Shimonoseki, travel to South Korea’s Busan, and return to Japan for a day in Nagasaki. In Kagoshima, see the Sakurajima volcano or throw a coin (and make a wish) at Kirishima-Jingu Shrine. In Kobe, marvel at the beautiful Nunobiki Falls and visit the picturesque area of Kitano Ijikan-Gai. Your last stop will be Shimizu, which has excellent views of Mt Fuji. Here, visit the striking Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, the local castle, or a sushi shop near the port area.

After your cruise, spend a final night in Yokohama before returning home.

With return full-service international flights, a 10 or 11-night cruise aboard the Diamond Princess, 3 nights of 4-star accommodation and at least 29 meals, including all while cruising, this package is a fantastic way to discover Japan from the comfort of a ship.

Its main attraction is the "Hells of Beppu," a collection of seven stunning onsen, or hot springs, some of which feature geysers and colourful waters in shades from white to copper to sapphire (fees apply). The springs' names, including Kamado-Jigoku (Cooking Pot Hell) and Oniyama-Jigoku (Crocodile Hell), are somewhat misleading as all of the hot springs are breathtakingly beautiful rather than frightening - though your nose may cower and crinkle at the sulphurous odour they emit!

Overnight: Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 6 Hiroshima, Japan

Arrive: 09:00 - Depart: 18:00

On August 6, 1945, human history was irrevocably altered when the American bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb was code-named "Little Boy," but its detonation left half the city in ruins and aflame. Today, Hiroshima is a monument not only to the destructive forces harnessed by men but also to the indomitable will of the human spirit to overcome tragedy. At the heart of the city lies Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. The gutted walls of the city's old Industry Promotion Hall and the skeletal frame that supported its copper dome vaporized in the blast are instantly recognizable symbols of Hiroshima.

Travelers to Hiroshima will discover a more serene side at nearby Miyajima Island. One of Japan's top three scenic spots, the island is home to the ancient Itsukushima Shrine, a designated National Treasure.

Overnight: Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 7 Shimonoseki, Japan

Shimonoseki, a charming coastal city on the western tip of Japan's main island, Honshu, offers breathtaking panoramic views from the Kaikyō Yume Tower observation deck. Day 8 Busan, South Korea

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

The second largest city in South Korea, Busan is your gateway to a fascinating land whose culture is a unique amalgam of old and new. Modern high-rise towers dwarf ancient Buddhist temples. The city's bustling business district starkly contrasts the serene grounds of Yongdusan Park. In short, Busan is a microcosm of South Korea, a nation whose startling economic success often obscures one of Asia's most sophisticated and venerable cultures.

Overnight: Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 9 Nagasaki, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

For most travellers, Nagasaki is a symbol of the horror and the inhumanity of war. In 1945, the city became the second target of a nuclear attack. Today, Nagasaki's Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum draw visitors from around the world.

But this beautiful city in Kyushu offers other sights. Often described as the San Francisco of Japan, it occupies verdant hills surrounded by a deep-water bay. Nagasaki was Japan's sole window into the world for over two centuries. The city is also celebrated as the setting for Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly.

Overnight: Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess

Day 10 Miyazaki (Aburatsu), Japan

Arrive: 08:00 - Depart: 18:00

Boasting one of the warmest average temperatures in Japan, Miyazaki offers a playground of outdoor activities that take full advantage of its balmy breezes and aquamarine waters. You might like to explore the local botanical gardens, emerald green golf courses and more. The Tower of Peace, built with stones from throughout Asia, anchors the city at Heiwadai Park and is one of the most noted landmarks. Visit nearby Haniwa Gardens, where over 400 replica haniwa (burial statues) make for wonderful photo opportunities. You could then explore Miyazaki's history and culture on display at The Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature and History on the same grounds as the picturesque Miyazaki Shrine. For a change of pace, stop into the Miyazaki Science Center, where an animatronic "Dr Cosmo" welcomes you to this hands-on museum (charges apply).

Please note: Your ship docks at Aburatsu, approximately 45 kilometres from Miyazaki.

Overnight: Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 11 Kochi, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 15:00

Kochi sits on the broad alluvial plain facing Urado Bay. This city in Shikoku takes its name from the great feudal castle at its heart. Completed in 1611, Kochi Castle was the seat of Yamauchi Kazutoyo, a noted warrior who supported Tokugawa Ieyasu's successful quest to become Shogun. Tosa Province and Kochi Castle were Yamauchi's reward for faithful service. There is a historical irony here: 250 years later, a Kochi native son - a former low-ranked samurai and now ronin named Sakamoto Ryoma - played a pivotal role in bringing the Tokugawa Shogunate to an end and restoring the Emperor of Japan to political prominence. The prize once awarded for faithful service had become a hotbed of support for the Meiji Restoration.

Overnight: Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 12 Toba, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

Toba, located at the northeastern end of the Shima-hanto Peninsula in Mie Prefecture, flourished as the castle town of the Kuki family, who ruled this region from the 16th century. It was also a landing spot for visitors on the route to Ise-Jingu Shrine, which belonged to Ise-Shima National Park.

Please note: This port is accessed by water shuttle. Boarding and disembarking water shuttles may involve steps and uneven surfaces. While cruise lines strive to provide easy access, accessibility options can vary at different water shuttle ports. Passengers with mobility concerns are encouraged to inquire about specific arrangements and consider their individual needs when participating in water shuttle activities.

Day 10 Kagoshima, Japan

Arrive: 07:00 - Depart: 16:00

From the 12th century to the Meiji Restoration of 1868, Kagoshima was the chief stronghold of the mighty Shimazu clan. The city lies at the top of the Satsuma Peninsula, a mountainous, geothermal wonderland of hot springs and geysers. The area is also rich in modern Japanese history: Saigo Takamori and the Satsuma samurai were leaders of the Meiji Restoration that toppled the shogun and restored the Emperor to power in 1868. In 1877, dissatisfied with the direction of the new government, Saigo led the Satsuma Rebellion, which ended in his death and the final defeat of the samurai.

The symbol of Kagoshima is Sakurajima, the volcanic island just offshore. Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan.

Day 11 Kochi, Japan

Engage with locals and indulge in local flavours in this welcoming city, known for its famed dish Katsuo no tataki (a type of tuna Tataki). The city centre was initially settled in 1601 as a town surrounding Kochi Castle, now one of the region's principal attractions. It only takes a short time in this walker's paradise to see why Kōbe is considered one of Japan's most beautiful cities. Where else can you find natural waterfalls (Nunobiki Falls) in an urban setting that have inspired artists for centuries? Historic sites and museums intertwine with immaculate parks and vibrant culinary, arts and jazz music scenes.
